Volunteer members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force were able to free her, allowing Charity to return to her original time. So Charity Burbage had to be sacrificed. The two chose further torture, as both survived for the next battle. James was independently wealthy from family money when he left Hogwarts, sufficiently such that he was able to support himself, Sirius, and Lily as full-time unpaid fighters for the Order of the Phoenix.
